Someone ready to contact you can still give up on a difficult form. Examine the details between finding the contact page and receiving a useful confirmation.
Ask only what you need for the first reply
A name, a reply channel, and a short description may be enough. Detailed specifications, addresses, or company registration numbers can wait until needed. If an undecided budget is acceptable, offer a “Not sure yet” option.
Keep labels visible
Use persistent field labels rather than relying on placeholders that disappear during typing. Add a short example to open questions, such as a restaurant website needing a menu and reservation link. Distinguish required and optional fields.
Make errors actionable
Explain how to fix an error beside the relevant field. “Include @ in your email address” is more useful than “Invalid format.” Preserve other entered information and provide a retry or alternative contact method when the connection fails.
Show what happened after submission
Display processing, success, and failure states. Explain how the team will reply and give a response time only if the team can meet it. Confirm on the receiving side that the inquiry was saved and the notification reached the correct person.
Test on a phone with a new user
Ask someone unfamiliar with the site to find the form from a service page and submit it. Check whether the keyboard hides buttons, text is readable, and mistakes can be corrected. Deliberately omit a required field and test recovery after failure.
Before you start
- Justify every required field.
- Keep labels and useful examples visible.
- Preserve non-sensitive inputs after errors.
- Verify confirmation for the visitor and the receiving team.
Your next step
A useful first improvement can be as small as removing a field or clarifying a failed submission. Walk through the real customer journey before redesigning the page.
